STEVE MURRAY | BURN ‘EM BREWING
I’m Steven Murray, I live in Laporte, IN, but grew up in Michigan City and went to New Prairie High School.
I've mostly worked in the service industry, working in every aspect of catering from valet parking cars to tending bar at my friend's Mom's catering company. I come from a construction background, working on jobs with my dad as far back as I can remember, but later on in life I started bartending in South Bend while attending Indiana University- South Bend where I was going for Fine Arts Major focusing on sculpture. Eventually moved on to bartending and then brewing at Greenbush Brewing Co. in Sawyer, MI, where Burn 'Em kind of got its start.
Tell us about Burn ‘Em Brewing
Burn 'Em Brewing is a microbrewery specializing in making weird and traditional beers.
How many employees do you have?
We have 10 employees. With 7 full time employed owners.
What’s the inspiration behind your name?
The name was chosen in tribute to my father, Hugh Burnham Murray, whose construction company used to occupy our brewery's building. We used to home brew together when I was younger, and none of this would have been possible without him. He is no longer with us.
Favorite thing about being an entrepreneur
The best thing about being an entrepreneur in our business is the satisfaction of seeing our hard work bring people together and make people happy.
MOST DIFFICULT PART ABOUT BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR
One of the hardest things to entrepreneurship is staying realistic. You make mistakes every day and learn something new in turn.
FAVORITE LOCAL RESTAURANT
My favorite local restaurant... I don’t really have one. There are some I frequent more than others, but as another business owner I try to go to as many different places as I can to try what everyone's doing new and to support the local scene.
FAVORITE LOCAL SHOP
One of my favorite local shops has got to be Roxy Music of Laporte. I've been going there since I started playing guitar around 15 years ago and it's always been the same friendly owners working there.
FAVORITE ENTREPREUR RESOURCE
One of the best resources an entrepreneur can utilize is the internet. Focusing on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are very cheap ways to grow your business.
MOST VALUABLE THING/LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR
Ive learned how to properly manage my time and to truly be responsible.
My guilty pleasure is my farm. I live in the house I grew up in on 10 acres with my wife, Olivia and our two dogs. I have a massive garden I grow every year and I can/jar/ferment my fruits and veggies. I love to cook.
