TELL US ABOUT HOWE FARMS
We are a true family farm. In the winter of 2013, we re-established Howe Farms on the land our family farmed since 1851 with the goal of creating a place where our family could work and learn from one another for generations to come. It gives us the opportunity to chase our dreams, continually reach higher, and teach our children the love of farming, family, and community.
We strive to be better every single day. Better for our family, better for our community, better for our land. Love for our family and community has blossomed into a conscious effort to be as local as possible. The face-to-face interactions that occur when you buy local are just as important as the economic impacts of buying local.
Craft farming is our life's passion and we work to produce the highest quality products available. We believe in small batches, slow growth, and attention to detail. There are no shortcuts in life or in farming
HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE?
No employees...just us. Steve, Jenn, Addison, Easton, and some help from family and friends that volunteer for beer.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LEAVE TEACHING TO PURSUE FARMING?
Inspiration is a crazy thing. I love farming. My whole life, I wanted to farm. My way. Not what I saw from others. As Jenn and I talked about it, timing never seemed quite right, then like many people, we lost close loved ones. This pushed us to chase our passion. Kinda the cliche of “life is short.”
But, we started really slow. For four years, we would slowly add a small piece of the farm. Then in 2017, I had to make a choice...I chose my dreams.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR?
My favorite thing about being an entrepreneur is the pressure. The ball is in my hands. I have to know everything about everything. I have to be prepared for scenarios that may not ever happen. I have to be all in all the time. It's exhilarating. It's absolutely my favorite thing...but it's the most difficult, too. You always have to be on. I represent the brand and my family every second of every day.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL SHOP?
As for local shops...I don't shop. Only for farm items.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ENTREPRENEUR RESOURCE?
I am beyond lucky to have a support system like I do. I try to ask as many questions as possible, and brewery owners have been my go-to resources. They have been happy to answer anything. But it's not just them, it’s truly is a community that helps me. I have advisors in almost every non-farming aspect of my business.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR?
Education. It's the most valuable thing we have. Don't ever stop learning. The second you do, you will get passed by someone trying to BE BETTER. Also, relationships. Don't ever underestimate the value of relationships.
FUN FACT ABOUT YOU?
I love hugs!
