Young Entrepreneurs Rising: Part 1

Written by Bill Nelson // February, 2024

Dictionary.com defines an entrepreneur as “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.” With added emphasis on the word, “risk,” entrepreneurship presents significant challenge to anyone who dares walk its path. Add being young to the rubric and the prospects of failure escalate exponentially as limited experience and resources intensify the challenges.

In this three-part series of The Column, we’ll meet three young entrepreneurs, and members of The Collective, who accepted the challenges of entrepreneurship, and launched businesses despite the risk, forging ahead with confidence that their “considerable initiative” would be the key ingredient to success. Here in part one of the series, we’ll meet Seth Spencer, founder, creative, and owner of Sera Group located at 125 E. Shore Parkway, Suite A in LaPorte, IN.

As early as middle school, Seth Spencer dreamed of owning a business. In college, he activated his dream and before graduating launched Sera Group, an IT consulting and repair business. That was seven years ago. Since then, Seth, adapted with the needs of his clients and shifted the focus of Sera Group to advertising, marketing, and website design. With the goals of creating better client solutions, leading a team of talented individuals dedicated to excellence, and creating a client experience rather than simply a client transaction, Seth is intentional about fostering a culture in which his team thrives and his clients flourish. This approach has delivered measurable results for Sera Group, and makes the business highly competitive in the website design and digital marketing industry.

Seth’s success has not come easy. In the infancy of Sera Group, resources were tight, time was stretched between work and college, and Seth had to prove he could deliver winning results despite his youth and limited experience in the business world, a barrier Seth broke through by delivering client satisfaction time and time again. Seth believes in surrounding himself with mentors and passing on what he’s learned by mentoring others. One mentor offered wisdom that Seth lives by: “Be happy, be humble, and know your worth.” Living by, and running Sera Group by that motto, Seth developed four core values that guide him and his team: Quality, Reliability Innovation, and Community. Seth places much emphasis on the core value of community, encouraging his team to volunteer in the community, and doing so alongside them. One way Seth and his team participate in the local community is through pet adoption sponsorship.

Seth attributes much of his success to the philosophy of creating a client experience, not a client transaction.  He finds business transactions by nature are boring, unappealing to both clients and his team, and lead to complacency and lack of creativity. With an emphasis on relationship building, both within the Sera Group team and with its clients, Seth prefers to create an experience for his clients that fosters long-term relationships and lasting client satisfaction. As Seth says, “Businesses have a story to tell. When I better know my client and their story, I can help them tell their story to others, promoting their business, and impacting the entire community.” From the looks of Seth’s impact on the community so far, expect to see much more from Seth and Sera Group.
